Software organizers such as Microsoft Outlook all have global and static calendar displays that are useful for building, organizing and consulting schedules. However, they can't be continuously displayed on the screen, and accessing them has a cost. Most tools additionally provide customizable reminders that pop-up a given amount of time before the event actually occurs. Those reminders are useful but intrusive and do not allow the user to anticipate events in a natural way. For example, as an event is approaching, the user will typically have to make decisions on which tasks to perform, including completing his current work or starting preparatory activities related to the event. Pop-up reminders are not suitable for such continuous time management tasks.OutClock is a small innovative tool from our Human-Computer Interaction research lab thataddresses those problems of short-term time management with software organizers. OutClock supplements Microsoft Outlook's calendar display and pop-up reminders by giving the user a continuous and non-intrusive feedback on his upcoming events. Basically, it displays his next Outlook appointments inside a desktop clock. This new visualization technique takes advantage of people ability to monitor time without interrupting their task. OutClock has been initially designed as a proof-of-concept application, which has had a great success among our testers. We have now released a fully functional version which is downloadable for free, in order to collect broader user feedback.
